Beware of rumors about those $2,000 stimulus checks flying around. Yes, we’re in times where money is tight, inflation is tightening, and any news of extra cash sounds like heavenly music. But so far, President Donald Trump’s administration hasn’t said a peep about a new universal stimulus check of that amount. Don’t get your hopes up just yet.

Social media and some websites are hyping up the “fourth check” as if it were a continuation of the ones that arrived during the pandemic. Just like the story of the $5,000 “DOGE Dividends” is floating around without official backing. These are hopes, not confirmations.

What stimulus check is actually on the way?

While we wait (or not) for that mythical check, there is fresh money that is scheduled to arrive for many in the coming weeks. IRS tax refunds are the most massive; the average is around $3,000, and they are sent out as returns are processed. Monthly Social Security payments continue as normal, on time as always. And keep an eye on class-action settlements: some recent cases could put up to $6,500 in the pockets of those who qualify.

The supposed $5,000 issue began with statements by James Fishback, an investment executive. He talked about a massive federal savings strategy, but the initial figures ($2 trillion!) were drastically reduced to $150 billion. In the best-case scenario, that would mean aid of about $1,000 per household, not $5,000. Neither the White House nor any federal agency has raised a hand to announce new stimulus payments nationwide. That door seems closed for now.

If we’re talking about federal aid that’s already expired, the last train to leave was the $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit for fiscal year 2021, but only for those who hadn’t claimed it before. That ship finally sailed on April 15. There’s no turning back.

These stimulus checks that REALLY do exist

But here’s the good news: some states are taking the initiative! New York, for example, just launched an economic stimulus package for 2026 designed to ease the pressure of inflation. The governor wants families to breathe easier.

How? By combining surprises like direct checks with tax cuts. And the best part: almost everything is automatic, without cumbersome paperwork.

Let’s break down what’s happening in New York because it’s promising. First, taxes: 75% of the state’s taxpayers will see a reduction in their bills. We’re talking nearly $1 billion a year returning to the pockets of 8.3 million people. It’s the largest tax cut in decades, directly aimed at giving the middle class a break.

Now for the eye-catching part: direct checks. If you live in New York, you could receive up to $400 without doing anything at all. The plan is to send inflation-adjusted refunds between October and November 2025, using money from the sales tax surplus.

If you’re single and earn up to $75,000 a year, you’ll get $200. If your income is between $75,000 and $150,000, you’ll get $150. If you file as a couple and your joint income doesn’t exceed $150,000, you’ll receive $400. If your joint income is between $150,000 and $300,000, you’ll receive $300. More than 8 million households qualify. No forms required: the money will appear directly in your account or by mail.

For families with children, there’s more good news. The Child Tax Credit has been significantly expanded. It now provides up to $1,000 for each child under 4 years old and $500 for those between 4 and 16 years old. Do the math: two preschool-aged children mean an extra $2,000 a year.
