New Child Tax Credits Introduced in Two US States: Save Thousands of Dollars

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed the distribution of inflation-related rebate checks to 8.2 million families in New York. The maximum amount will be $400, based on reported income in 2023. The measure, part of the 2026 State Budget, seeks to alleviate the impact of inflation on basic expenses such as housing and food.

The plan includes tax cuts for the middle class and expands the child tax credit to $1,000 per child annually. It also guarantees universal free school meals. These changes respond to rising prices for essential services in recent years, according to official documents from the Department of Taxation and Finance.

Requirements to claim your $500 stimulus payment

Inflation rebate checks are based on increased sales taxes paid by taxpayers. Hochul stated, “They paid more than they expected. That’s the idea behind a rebate.” The funds come from surpluses collected by the state, redirected to residents rather than from state reserves.

To receive the payment, citizens must have filed Form IT-201 in 2023 and meet specific income thresholds. They cannot be claimed as dependents on another return. This payment applies only to New York City residents, excluding residents of other parts of the state.

The amounts vary depending on tax status and income. For example, singles earning less than $75,000 will receive $200, while married couples with joint incomes under $150,000 will receive $400. Heads of household and surviving spouses are also included, according to tables published by the state government.

No additional application is required: payments will be sent automatically to those who meet the criteria. The Department of Taxation and Finance will use 2023 return data to verify eligibility. Address changes must be updated by September 2025 to avoid delays.

Let’s crack this down, for you to understand it more easily:

  • Single filers:

    • Income up to $75,000 → $200 check

    • Income between $75,000–$150,000 → $150 check

  • Married couples filing jointly:

    • Income up to $150,000 → $400 check

    • Income between $150,000–$300,000 → $300 check

  • Married couples filing separately:

    • Income up to $75,000 → $200 check

    • Income between $75,000–$150,000 → $150 check

  • Heads of household:

    • Income up to $75,000 → $200 check

    • Income between $75,000–$150,000 → $150 check

  • Qualified surviving spouses:

    • Income up to $150,000 → $400 check

When will you find a paycheck in your mailbox?

Inflation rebate checks will be mailed starting mid-October 2025. There will be no specific order by region or zip code, according to officials. The process will take several weeks due to the volume of recipients, with no option for individual tracking.

Contact Center representatives confirmed they will not be able to provide updates on payment statuses. Hochul recommended “checking your inbox patiently.” Delays could occur due to address errors or data verification, although taxpayers were urged to ensure their tax information is up-to-date.

The government will not issue reminders or advance notifications. Checks will arrive in envelopes without clear state identification to prevent theft. Authorities warned of potential scams requesting personal information to “speed up” the process.
