After the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) distributed a large portion of the tax refunds, some states are still distributing checks at local levels, so millions of American households could benefit from a cash bonus they may not have considered.

One of these states is Georgia, which is currently implementing the distribution of budget surplus tax refunds. This initiative operates under the framework of the HB112 bill, authorized during the 2025 legislative session. This is the third time this mechanism has been activated.

$1.2 billion in tax refunds in Georgia: Here’s who qualifies

The funds allocated for this repayment program range between $1 billion and $1.2 billion. These resources come from solid state revenues and a confirmed budget surplus. The financial availability allowed for the plan’s implementation.

Eligibility requirements include having filed tax returns for tax years 2023 and 2024 and residing in Georgia permanently, partially, or even as a nonresident who can demonstrate tax and financial interests in the state. The deadline was May 1, 2025, or October 15 with an approved extension.

Tax compliance is required to access the benefit, so you must not have any tax debts at the time you claim the tax refund check.

Amounts to expect from tax refunds

The maximum tax refund amounts vary depending on the declared marital status:

  • Single or married filing separately: up to $250
  • Head of household: up to $375
  • Married filing jointly: up to $500

The distribution of these tax surplus payments in Georgia began in June, and the primary method of delivery is direct deposit, although physical checks are also an option that must be indicated when filing a tax return.

The estimated time to receive payment is 6 to 8 weeks after filing the return. This applies to those who filed before May 1.

Reports from mid-June indicate 476,503 refunds issued. The total value distributed amounts to approximately $148 million. Authorities confirmed these developments.

Where’s my Georgia tax refund?

The Georgia Department of Revenue offers a digital tool: the Surplus Tax Refund Checker. It requires an SSN/ITIN and a 2023 Adjusted Gross Income. It allows you to confirm the status of your refund.

Transactions appear as “GASTTAXRFD” on bank statements. This abbreviation stands for “Georgia State Tax Refund,” not fuel refunds.

If payment doesn’t appear, the DOR recommends waiting for all batches to be finalized. The suggested timeframe is up to 8 weeks before inquiring.
