Usually, the Social Security Administration (SSA) calendar strictly follows the stipulated dates. Each month, the payments start on the first of that month with the Supplementary Security Income (SSI) payments for the beneficiaries of this group.

Then come the payments for those who have been receiving Social Security since before May 1997 or who receive both SSI and Social Security at the same time (in this particular group, SSI is paid on the first of each month and Social Security is paid on the 3rd of each month).

Then will be delivered the retirees’ payments, which arrive on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month, grouped according to the date of birth.

And voilà, that’s the whole calendar for each month, but on a few occasions there are anomalies due to the Social Security Administration’s policy of not sending payments on holidays or weekends. When a payday or some kind of benefit falls on a weekend, it is brought forward to the previous business day.

Why Your SSI Benefits Will Arrive a Day Earlier Than Usual

That is the reason why the beneficiaries of Supplemental Security Income will receive two payments in the month of May and no payments in the month of June. On the first of May they already received their payment corresponding to that month, everything is fine so far.

Then, on May 31, they will receive a second payment. Don’t fool yourself or get too excited because it’s not extra money, but it corresponds to the payment of the first of June: that date falls on a Saturday and that’s why the SSA advances the payment to May 31.

In total, SSI beneficiaries, as well as SSDI beneficiaries, retirees, survivors and spouses of retirees, receive 12 payments per year, not one more. The next time this peculiarity of the SSA calendar is repeated will be on November 29, 2024.

In that month, SSI beneficiaries will receive two payments and then in December there will be no check for that month (because it was already sent in November, as we mentioned above). But they are going to see on December 31 another check that corresponds to the first of January 2025. That day, in addition to the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl, is a holiday, so the SSA sends the advance payment one day before.

Why You’ll Get Your June SSI Payment Early in May

How Much Can I Get From SSI in 2024, if I Qualify?

According to the official website of the SSA, the maximum monthly payment during 2024 is $943 for an individual and $1415 for a married couple. The amount may be lower depending on the beneficiary’s income, the income of certain family members, the household living situation, and other factors.

How does income affect your SSI payment? A person who receives SSI and also has income from a gainful activity qualifies for a lower payment. SSA reduces $1 of your SSI payment for every $2 you earn. Computable work includes:

  • A job
  • Self-employment
  • Any activity that generates money.

For every $1 you receive from non-work sources, we reduce your SSI payment by about $1. Non-employment sources include:

  • Disability benefits
  • Unemployment payments
  • Pensions
