The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program offers crucial financial support for people with limited resources and who meet certain disability, age, or income requirements. In 2025, SSI recipients saw an increase in the maximum amounts of their monthly payments, effective since January, representing significant relief for many families who were impacted by the rising cost of living.

By 2025, the maximum monthly SSI benefit for an eligible individual will be $967. This amount is designed to help cover basic needs such as food, housing and other essential expenses. For an eligible couple, where both spouses qualify for the program, the maximum monthly benefit will increase to $1,450.

There is also an item in the SSI benefits system for the payment of an essential helping person, for which there is a maximum payable of $484.

Who qualifies for SSI in 2025? These are the program guidelines

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program in the United States administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that provides financial assistance to people with limited resources and who meet certain disability, age, or medical condition criteria.

A person is considered eligible if they are a US citizen or legal resident, living in US territory. Additionally, they must comply with the income and resource limits established by the program, which include restrictions on financial assets and property within the limits established by the SSA.

Adults over age 65, as well as adults and children with physical or mental disabilities that substantially impair their ability to work and are expected to last at least 12 months or result in death, may also be eligible.

For 2025, the monthly income limit generally cannot exceed $914 for individuals and $1,371 for couples. However, certain types of income, such as the first $20 of unearned income or part of earned income, may be excluded from the calculation. This means that some people with incomes slightly above the threshold could still qualify thanks to these exclusions.

The next date for SSI beneficiaries is January 31, advanced from February 1, a date that falls on a weekend. The SSA does not pay benefits on holidays or weekends. The final requirements that will be asked of you, in case you want to apply to receive your SSI benefits, will be indicated to you when you start the process.
