Who Don’t you love a good stimulus check? Yes, I know you would like to receive one too, and we can give you good news: the New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that inflation relief checks of up to $400 will be sent to 8.2 million households across New York State this fall.

Checks will be automatically sent to taxpayers who have filed a New York State Resident Income Tax Return (Form IT-201) for tax year 2023. Payments will be mailed beginning very soon, and the application or registration process is, actually, super easy Amounts vary by filing status and income, and we’ll look at who qualifies for these payments.

Taxpayers who qualify for the $400 anti-inflation stimulus checks

New York households that qualify to receive these payments are those that meet any of the following characteristics:

  • Single taxpayers with income up to $75,000 will receive $200.
  • Single taxpayers with income between $75,000 and $150,000 will receive $150.
  • Joint taxpayers with income up to $150,000 will receive $400.
  • Joint taxpayers with income between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive $300.

The program did not establish age restrictions, and those who qualify do not need to complete any paperwork or process to access the $400 payment. If you filed your taxes correctly and on time, and your income is within the thresholds above, you will receive a check in your mailbox very soon.

Where do these stimulus checks come from?

The initiative is part of the Fiscal Year 2026 State Budget, which includes other measures such as reducing taxes for the middle class, expanding the Child Tax Credit up to $1,000 per child and guaranteeing universal free school meals. These actions seek to alleviate the financial burden of New York families.

Governor Hochul said, “Starting in October, more than 8 million New Yorkers will receive an inflation refund because it’s simple: This is your money and we’re putting it back in your pockets.”

Checks will be distributed statewide, with the following estimates by region:

  • New York City: 3.53 million homes.
  • Long Island: 1.25 million.
  • Mid-Hudson: 924,000.
  • Western New York: 585,000.
  • Finger Lakes: 513,000.
  • Capital Region: 475,000.
  • Central New York: 321,000.
  • Southern Tier: 251,000.
  • Mohawk Valley: 198,000.
  • North Country: 156,000.

If you want to know more about this program, times, amounts, and more, and know if you are really eligible, the state of New York has created a specialized website, ny.gov/inflationrefund, where you can clear all your doubts. You know: next fall, you could be receiving a $400 paycheck to mitigate the impact of inflation, if you live in the Empire State and meet the requirements.
