The Social Security Administration (SSA) has released details on December payments for the past two weeks, including (but not limited to) the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program. Recipients should keep an eye on their assigned dates to ensure they receive their payments smoothly.

The calendar for December, like that of all months, is designed to facilitate the staggered distribution of funds. Beneficiaries are divided into two main groups: those who began receiving payments before May 1997 and those who began receiving payments after that date.

Requirements to access SSDI payments

Those interested in receiving SSA benefits must meet certain specific requirements depending on the program they apply for. To retire, you must be at least 62 years old and have contributed to the SSA for at least 10 years. In the case of SSDI, applicants must have a medical certificate proving a disability and have contributed for 5 of the last 10 years.

Survivor benefits are available to those who were dependent on a worker who paid SSA contributions. Finally, the SSI program is aimed at people over 65 years of age or with a disability, with monthly income less than $1,971 and assets less than $2,000.

SSDI dates for this December 2024

Recipients who began receiving payments before May 1997 received their funds on December 3, regardless of which program they belong to, as well as beneficiaries that reside abroad. On the other hand, those people who started after that date will have dates assigned according to their program and date of birth.

For those receiving SSI, payments will arrive on December 1. In the case of OASDI (Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance), the dates are distributed as follows:

  • Born between December 1 and 10: payment on December 11 (payment already sent)
  • Born between December 11 and 20: payment on December 18.
  • Born between December 21 and 31: payment on December 24.

Remember that if your benefits do not arrive on the stipulated date, the SSA recommends waiting at least three business days before contacting the agency. It is possible to contact the SSA through its official website (www.ssa.gov) or through the authorized telephone numbers: 1-800-772-1213 and 1-800-325-0778 (the latter for people with hearing disabilities ).

How much will SSDI recipients receive in December?

The amounts received by all Social Security beneficiaries remain, broadly speaking, fairly unchanged compared to the averages seen throughout 2024.

The average expected for SSDI disability beneficiaries is around $1,404.75, and Social Security survivor benefits will be $1,509.29. It is important to remember that these values may vary depending on the contribution history of each beneficiary and other factors, so the amount in each particular case is different.
