If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you’re probably wondering: where is my March payment? Don’t worry, it’s not a mistake. The Social Security Administration (SSA) moved up the deposit to February 28 because March 1 falls on a Saturday. So the money has already arrived, just a little earlier than usual.

SSI is a federal program for people who are low-income, over age 65, disabled, or blind. Unlike other benefits, it does not require work history: it is based on your current financial situation. It covers basic expenses like food or rent, and payments usually arrive on the first day of each month… except when there are weekends involved.

Clear rules: this is how SSI date adjustments work

The SSA has a simple policy: if the first day of the month is a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, the payment is moved to the last previous business day. For example, in March 2025, since the 1st is a Saturday, the money was sent on Friday, February 28. It is not that a payment is “missing”: it just changes the date.

So you don’t miss out, here are the adjusted dates for the first months of the year:

  • January 2025: Payment arrived on December 31, 2024 (because January 1 is a holiday).
  • February 2025: Paid on January 31 (February 1 was a Saturday).
  • March 2025: Moved forward to February 28 (avoiding Saturday, March 1).
  • April 2025: Everything normal: payment falls on April 1, which is Tuesday.

These changes are common and only affect the schedule, not the amount. The SSA does them to avoid delays, especially in months with difficult weekends. So, to answer the question in the headline of this article, you’re not losing any money at all: you’ll get a total of 12 payments in 2025.

What if I don’t see the money in my account? This is what you can do

If you use direct deposit, your payment should automatically appear on the adjusted date. If you receive a check in the mail, it may take a few more days. The SSA recommends waiting three business days before contacting them. But in March 2025, don’t worry: if you received the payment on February 28, there is nothing pending for that month.

If you did not receive your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment on February 28, 2025, as expected for the month of March, you can contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) by calling toll-free 1-800-772-1213.

This service is available Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time, and will allow you to speak with a representative to verify the status of your payment; Please wait three business days after the expected date before calling to allow time for processing.

If you prefer in-person assistance, you can also visit your local SSA office, which you can locate using the locator at www.ssa.gov/locator/ by entering your zip code; Bring identification and any relevant documentation to expedite the process.
