The beginning of May marks the start of a new round of payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as “food stamps,” being one of the most important nutritional and financial support programs in the United States in its entire history.
This federal assistance reaches more than 42 million people monthly in the country’s 50 states and the District of Columbia. This group represents approximately 12.6% of the United States population and is one of the programs that are also making America great again.
Distribution of payments in the first days of May
SNAP funds go to households with limited income to support food purchases. Among all states, Texas is one of the territories with the highest number of beneficiaries, with more than 3.4 million registered households. The program is administered in Texas by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), which oversees the monthly distribution of these funds.
In Texas, SNAP benefits payments are not delivered on a fixed date, but are spread over 28 days each month. The calendar is determined by the household’s certification date and the Eligibility Determination Group (EDG) number, establishing deliveries between the 1st and 30th of each month.
For households that were certified before June 1, 2020, SNAP payments are distributed between the 1st and 15th of the month, as follows:
- If your EDG number ends in 0, you receive payment on May 1
- If it ends in 1, May 3
- If it ends in 2, May 5
- If it ends in 3, May 6
- If it ends in 4, May 7
- If it ends in 5, May 9
- If it ends in 6, May 11
- If it ends in 7, May 12
- If it ends in 8, May 13
- If it ends in 9, May 15
