Nationwide, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are a federal assistance program designed to provide support to low-income individuals and families in obtaining nutritious food. These benefits can be utilized to purchase eligible food items at authorized retailers, thereby promoting improved nutrition and health for participants. SNAP operates under the supervision of the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

In Texas, SNAP benefits are administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). This state agency is responsible for processing applications, determining eligibility, and disbursing benefits to approved households.

Qualifying for SNAP benefits in Texas

To qualify for SNAP in Texas, applicants must meet specific income and resource criteria, as well as citizenship and residency requirements. The HHSC conducts evaluations of applications and provides benefits based on factors such as household size, income levels, and deductions for necessary expenses.

The distribution of SNAP benefits occurs on a monthly cycle, with deposits made onto the Lone Star Card, Texas’ electronic benefits transfer (EBT card). Recipients utilize this card to buy approved food items at various retailers throughout the state. The payment schedule is critical for families relying on these benefits to manage their monthly food supply, as it directly affects their budgeting and shopping practices.
