Getting help to buy food doesn’t have to be a hassle. In Texas, the SNAP program (also known as nutrition assistance) is a real option for many families, but you have to know how to navigate between requirements, procedures and key dates. Here we leave you the essential information, including the details of the payments scheduled between March 6 and 16, 2025 (the closest dates).

If you think there isn’t a debit card that helps you pay for basic groceries… actually there is: that’s the Lone Star Card, the method Texas uses to deliver SNAP benefits. In addition to using it in physical stores, you can buy seeds to grow your own food (yes, it’s official!). The program is managed by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), so everything is regulated.

Do you meet SNAP requirements in Texas?

First, you must be a resident of Texas and have US citizenship or legal residency. The second: your income. The limit is 130% of the federal poverty level. For example, if you live alone, your monthly salary should not exceed $2,005, while for a couple the limit is $2,712. Although if there is a child at home, the maximum number increases.

Now, if you are between 18 and 52 years old and do not have children, you need to work at least 20 hours a week or be in a training program. But don’t worry: there are exceptions if you are pregnant, have a disability or similar situations. They will also review your savings (bank accounts, property other than your house or car), but the limits are flexible.

Steps to apply for SNAP in Texas

Texas gives you four options to apply for food stamps:

  • Online: The fastest. Go to YourTexasBenefits, create an account and fill out the H1010 form.
  • In person: Stop by an HHSC office. They help you with the paperwork.
  • By mail: Request the form by calling 2-1-1 and send it to PO Box 149024, Austin, TX 78714-9968.
  • By fax: If you are still using that method, the number is 1-877-447-2839.

Don’t forget to attach documents such as identification, proof of income (payroll, taxes) and expenses (rent, services). Sign pages 1 and 18 of the form. If you get stuck, call 1-877-541-7905 for help.

Maximum SNAP benefit payments vary based on income and household size. The monthly limits for March 2025 are:

  • 1 person: $292
  • 2 people: $536
  • 3 people: $768
  • 4 people: $975
  • 5 people: $1,158
  • 6 people: $1,390
  • 7 people: $1,536
  • 8 people: $1,756

For older adults or people with disabilities: the TSAP program is the solution: If everyone in your household is over 60 or has disabilities, the Simplified Application Project (TSAP) is your best ally. With this program, the application is shorter, you do not need interviews to renew and the benefits last three years instead of six months. More info on the TSAP for SNAP page.
