As the Social Security Administrations (SSA) processes June payments, agency workers warn of potential operational delays that could cause complications for thousands of Americans. This change is attributed to the implementation of the Social Security Fairness Act.

Let’s take a quick review, before moving forward: the Social Security Fairness Act, which was passed on January 5, 2025, and which resulted in the reclaiming of money illegally withheld from hundreds of thousands of Americans.

These claims are processes that SSA officials must manually review, one by one, to determine whether they are admissible.

The Social Security Fairness Act increased payments to millions of Americans

The new legislation eliminated two provisions: the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). Approximately 3.2 million public employees could now qualify for increased benefits.

Other citizens could receive their first Social Security payment after the elimination of the WEP and GPO. These provisions reduced benefits for those who also received pensions for work not covered by the system. The change is significant.

According to White House spokeswoman Liz Huston, 2.3 million applications under the new law have already been processed through automation. Even though, there are thousands more cases that are pending to be processed.

Claims processing and deadlines for Social Security increases

The WEP and GPO provisions were in effect for almost 40 years before their elimination. The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) affected pension or retirement beneficiaries who had other employment covered by Social Security. It reduced benefits by up to 50%.

The Government Pension Offset (GPO) impacted those eligible for Social Security spousal benefits. This provision reduced the benefit by two-thirds, often eliminating the entire spousal benefit. Its repeal expands rights.

The remaining 900,000 cases require manual processing due to their complexity. SSA staff are instructed to prioritize these cases over routine work. This explains the warnings about delays in regular payments.

The original deadline for completing the 3.2 million Fairness Act claims was November. However, the new Social Security Commissioner, Frank Bisignano, is pushing for completion by July 1, 2025. The volume complicates the deadlines.

Social Security payment dates for June 2025

We’re seizing the moment (since you’re already here) to tell you about the various Social Security payments for retired beneficiaries who claimed their payments after May 1997. Beneficiaries in this category receive their payments in three different rounds each month—on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays—to avoid overloading the SSA’s distribution systems.

Beneficiaries with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of each month will receive their payments on Wednesday, June 11th. Recipients with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of each month will receive their payments on Wednesday, June 18th. Finally, beneficiaries with birthdays between the 21st and 31st of any month will see their money arrive in their bank accounts on June 25th.

There is a fourth group of beneficiaries comprised of several categories: those who received payments before May 1997, those who claim their payments while living abroad, and those who receive Social Security in conjunction with Supplemental Security Income (SSI), who receive their payments on the third day of each month.

The maximum Social Security benefit is set to $5,108 in 2025, while the average payment is around $2,000, as of dates from May 2025.
