With the start of a new month comes new payments sent out by the Social Security Administration (SSA), and they have already begun, for example, for Supplemental Security Income recipients, who already saw their first of two May payments on the 1st. Then, on May 2, payments arrived for those who receive Social Security since before May 1997, or who receive both Social Security and SSI.
Social Security beneficiaries with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of any month will receive their payment on May 14, 2025. This schedule, established by the SSA, assigns dates based on the day of birth to distribute monthly funds for those beneficiaries who claimed their payments after May 1997.
Two groups do not receive their payments on May 14: When do they expect their money?
The date May 14, as we said, is only for the first of the three groups categorized by their date of birth. Those with birthdays between the 11th and 20th will receive their payment on May 21, while those born between the 21st and 31st will get it on May 28. These dates apply to retirees, disabled people, and survivors who do not fit specific exceptions.
Returning to the date of May 2 (which is brought forward from May 3, because it is a weekend), that is also the payment day for those who receive Social Security retirement but who reside abroad, and for those whose Medicare premiums are covered by the SSA, for being low-income or disabled who cannot work due to their limitations.
How much is the maximum that Social Security can give me?
The maximum Social Security amounts in 2025 depend on the age at which a person decides to retire. Those who retire at age 70 may receive up to $5,108 per month. Instead, those who retire at full retirement age — 66 years and 8 months for those born in 1958 — will receive a maximum of $4,018 a month.
On the other hand, those who choose to retire at age 62 will receive a maximum of $2,831 per month. All of these figures already include the 2.5% cost of living adjustment (COLA) applied for 2025.
The amount of $5,108 is the maximum for those who delayed their retirement until age 70 and who had 35 years of high income, as well as their Social Security tax payments up to date and in all corresponding years.
Other beneficiaries receive double payments in May
SSI beneficiaries have a different scheme: they receive payments on the first day of each month. In May, your payment will be on the 1st (this is normal), and because June 1st is a Sunday, you will receive an advance disbursement on May 30th. This does not affect birthday-based groups.
The SSA clarifies that the amounts may vary depending on Medicare deductions or taxes. Additionally, COLA increases are automatically applied beginning in January, but payments reflect these adjustments throughout the year. The maximum SSI allotment is $967 for a single applicant, while a couple requesting the help together could get a maximum of $1,450.
