For the 7.4 million Americans who rely on Supplemental Security Income (SSI), May brought an unexpected surprise to their bank accounts. Instead of the usual single monthly deposit, they received two separate disbursements: the first for May (released promptly on May 1) and an additional one on May 30.
This move, which left some beneficiaries perplexed, was not an administrative error. It strictly complies with the calendar rules applied by the Social Security Administration (SSA) when weekends interfere with payments. The agency does not send deposits to beneficiaries on those particular days but instead advances payments to the nearest business day.
The SSA changes their benefits dates due to weekends
The mechanics are simple, though little known outside veteran beneficiary circles. The SSA always schedules SSI payments for the first business day of the month. When that first day falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday—as was the case with June 1, 2025 (a Sunday)—the agency automatically advances the deposit to the last previous business Friday.
So, that May 30 payment was actually the full amount of June’s aid. This is an established practice that avoids delays but disrupts household planning.
July marks a respite from this cycle of dates. The official calendar confirms that the seventh month’s payment will arrive on its calendar date: Tuesday, July 1. August will maintain this regularity with its scheduled deposit on Friday, August 1.
This brief period of normalcy will be welcomed by those who manage these vital resources to the last detail. As Martha G. de Albuquerque, a beneficiary since 2019, told me: “When the dates change, my medicine budget gets thrown off balance. I’m grateful that July comes without a hitch.”
But beware: the calm will be short-lived. According to the official 2025 schedule, three months will again see double payments: August, October, and December. The reason remains the same: the first days of September (Monday the 1st), November (Saturday the 1st), and January 2026 (Wednesday the 1st) trigger the advance payment protocol. Thus, the critical dates are:
- August 1st (August pay)
- August 29 (SEPTEMBER – write it down!)
- October 1st (October payment)
- October 31 (NOVEMBER – beware of Halloween)
- December 1st (December payment)
- December 31 (JANUARY 2026 – New Year’s advance)
What exactly does this program cover? SSI is really important for older adults (those that are 65 years old or over), people with total blindness or severe disabilities, and children with serious medical conditions. Its unique feature: it only benefits those with extremely limited resources and almost no income.
The current cap for working adults is $2,019 gross monthly—a figure that includes all sources of income. Interestingly, one in three recipients combines this support with other retirement or disability benefits from traditional Social Security.
To apply for SSI, there are three options, depending on your personal preference: start the process online at ssa.gov, visit any physical Social Security office (it’s a good idea to make an appointment), or call 1-800-772-1213 (or TTY 1-800-325-0778 for the hard of hearing).
