The Social Security Administration (SSA) confirmed that, this week, a group of beneficiaries of SSDI payments, that is, disability benefits, will receive their payments. They are the second group of those who requested their payments after May 1997, when there was a change in the way the agency sends the funds monthly.

For those who claimed their SSDI payments after May 1997 (and continue to receive them today), the SSDI payment schedule is based on the day of birth. For the third Wednesday, April 16, 2025, recipients with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of the month appear to be the ones receiving the payment. This includes disabled workers who meet the criteria, and in some cases, dependents such as spouses or children, depending on the situation.

The SSA confirmed the maximum amount to receive: Up to $4,018 in April

The maximum possible benefits depends on various circumstances, but very few qualify for this $4,018 amount: they require having had high incomes for several decades, while factors such as dependent benefits or compensation (for example, veterans’ pension) can also affect the final payment.

These are the requirements to receive the maximum SSDI payment in April:

Long work history and high income:

  • Have worked for at least 35 years in jobs covered by Social Security.
  • Having won close to maximum taxable limit from Social Security each year ($176,100 in 2025). The benefit is calculated based on average indexed monthly earnings (AIME), and only those who consistently met this limit receive the maximum.

Qualifying disability:

  • Have a medical condition that prevents you from performing substantial work (income below $1,550 per month in 2025 for non-blind; $2,590 for blind).
  • The disability must last at least one year or be terminal, according to strict Social Security Administration (SSA) criteria.

Sufficient Social Security contributions:

  • Accumulate enough labor credits (generally 40 credits, 20 of which must be recent, depending on age at time of disability).

A third group of beneficiaries are scheduled to receive their payments on the fourth Wednesday of the month: they are those who have a birthday after the 21st of any month. Payment will be on April 23 and with this deposit the calendar for the month of April ends.

As a recap, the first group of post-1997 recipients received their payments on Wednesday, April 9, and those who are receiving SSDI since before May 1997 saw their money hit their bank account on April 3.

If also get Supplemental Security Income (SSI), your next payment is scheduled to be delivered on May 1, which is a Thursday, so there are no date changes expected.
