According to the Social Security Administration (SSA) calendar, only one SSDI disability disbursement remains, corresponding to May 2025. Beneficiaries who have not received their payment should check their bank accounts or mailboxes in the coming days. Unusual delays require direct contact with the SSA.

SSDI beneficiaries will receive a historic increase in June 2025, with maximum amounts of $4,018 per month. The adjustment reflects inflation and cost-of-living changes approved for this year. Payments will follow the SSA’s regular schedule.

SSDI eligibility criteria in the year 2025: Qualifying disabled workers

Payments will be made on June 3 to beneficiaries who received SSDI before 1997. Others will receive funds on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday, depending on their date of birth. The SSA recommends confirming exact dates in your My Social Security account.

SSDI is intended for workers with severe disabilities who have contributed to Social Security. To qualify, they must demonstrate an inability to perform work earning more than $1,620 per month (for those who are not blind) or $2,700 (for those who are blind). At least 40 quarters of contributions are required.

The SSDI amount is determined by the average indexed monthly income (AIME) from the 35 highest-earning years. In 2025, the flex points are $1,226 and $7,391. Those who reached the maximum taxable wage receive the maximum benefit of $4,018.

The maximum family benefit can range from 85% to 150% of the worker’s benefit amount. Beneficiaries can work for nine months without losing benefits. After 24 months, they become eligible for Medicare, regardless of their age.

The difference between SSDI and other Social Security programs

SSDI is funded by payroll taxes and relies on prior contributions. SSI, on the other hand, is a welfare program for low-income individuals. In 2025, the COLA adjustment for SSDI is 2.5%, already included in the maximum amount.

The disability must impede substantial gainful activity (SGA) and last at least 12 months or be terminal. The SSA evaluates medical and employment history. Those who exceed the income limits in 2025 ($1,550/$2,590) are not eligible, except during the trial period.

If you receive SSDI payments, but also combine them with SSI benefits, then you will be able to see your SSI payments on the first day of each month, and then the SSDI payment date changes to the 3rd.

New online system to apply for SSI

The Social Security Administration (SSA) launched a revamped online system in 2025 to simplify applications for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This program provides financial assistance to seniors, adults, and children with disabilities or limited resources.

Unlike traditional SSDI, SSI is funded by federal taxes and is targeted at vulnerable populations, such as homeless people or those with mental health conditions.

The portal, available at www.ssa.gov, reduces paperwork: the form has been reduced from 54 to just 12 key questions. It uses conditional logic (skipping irrelevant questions based on your answers) and auto-complete to streamline the process. It is designed for adults ages 18 to 64 who:

  • They have never been married.
  • Apply for SSI and SSDI (disability benefits) at the same time.
  • Whether you are a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
  • They have not previously applied for SSI for themselves or third parties.

If you are 65 or older, have been married, or are applying for benefits for a child, you must still call 1-800-772-1213 or visit an SSA office. This service is also not available for renewals or adjustments to existing benefits.
