This Tax Refund Program Returns up to $500 per Taxpayer — Who Is Eligible?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) confirmed that a June 2025 payment will not be issued for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients. Some beneficiaries have expressed alarm on social media discussion forums and on websites such as Reddit, because they believe a payment is being taken away from them.

According to the rules of the program, when the first day of the month is a Sunday or holiday, the deposit of SSI (or any benefits from the SSA) is made on the previous business Friday. In this case, the payment was brought forward to May 30.

The official explanation from the Social Security Administration: This is what they told us

After we ran into these debates, with dozens of confused (and some upset) Social Security users and SSI recipients, we found the answer to this predicament. The automated system moves payments to the previous Friday if the first day of the month is not a business day. In May 2025, this generated two deposits: a regular one for May and an early one for June.

According to an SSA official, it is not an “additional” payment, nor an “extra” amount, but rather it only responds to that calendar adjustment that is activated from time to time, when the payment date is a weekend or holiday.

SSI dates change: Are there any changes in payments to expect?

In 2025, the maximum individual Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment will be $967 per month. For eligible couples, the amount can reach up to $1,450 per month.

These values can be adjusted for inflation or if the beneficiary’s income changes. In addition, the Social Security Administration clarifies that receiving two deposits in the same month does not mean an extra payment, but only a reorganization of payment dates.

Some beneficiaries mistakenly interpret the double payment as an extra benefit. The SSA recommends planning budgets by assigning each deposit to the corresponding month. Tools like bank account alerts or physical calendars help manage funds without overdrafts or misunderstandings.

The my Social Security platform allows you to confirm exact dates and amounts of each deposit. In cases of discrepancy, SSA suggests contacting local offices or consulting the official payment table. Additionally, entities like NerdWallet and USA Today provide updated guides to understand calendar changes.

Only these individuals qualify to receive SSI payments: apply if you are in the categories

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is designed to help people with limited resources who meet one of these criteria:

Adults over 65 years of age: They do not need to have a disability, but they must demonstrate low income and few resources (such as savings or property, excluding your main home).

People with disabilities (of any age): The disability must be medically certified, prevent work for at least 12 months or be terminal. This applies to adults and children (under 18 years of age with severe limitations).

Persons with total or partial blindness: Blindness must meet the Social Security Administration (SSA) medical definition: correctable vision of 20/200 or less in the eye with better vision.

Citizenship, residency, and other requirements: Be a United States citizen, national, or foreigner in specific categories (such as refugees from eligible categories). In any of the categories, the person must have a maximum of $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple in resources, not counting the house where they live, a basic car and some personal assets.
