Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive a new round of payments within a few days. The payments are paid monthly on the first day of the month. Sometimes, the Social Security Administration (SSA) advances payments when one of its deposit rounds falls on a weekend or holiday.
This was the case in June, as the first day of that month fell on a Sunday, prompting the SSA to send the SSI payment on May 30th, which in turn resulted in two payments in May instead of one (and no deposit at all in June).
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) coming soon in July
The SSI program establishes three maximum amounts: one for individuals, one for couples, and one for essential persons. Not all beneficiaries qualify, and many fall closer to an average that falls slightly short of the maximum.
The base values adjusted for the 2.5% cost of living (COLA) increase for 2025 are:
- $967 for individual beneficiaries
- $1,450 for eligible couples
- $484 for essential people (certified caregivers)
These maximum amounts are subject to reductions based on:
- Income: Earnings from work reduce the benefit by $1 for every $2 earned. Outside support such as pensions or family assistance reduces the payment dollar for dollar.
- Housing: Living free of charge in third-party housing can result in savings of up to $342.33 per month.
- Geographic location: Some states (e.g. California, Illinois) offer supplements that increase these values.
Eligibility Requirements for SSI Benefits
To maintain payments during this period, beneficiaries must continually comply with:
- Resource limits: Maintain personal assets under $2,000 (individuals) or $3,000 (couples), excluding primary residence and one vehicle.
- Medical condition/age: Certified disability, blindness, or age by or over 65 years.
- Permanent residence: Remain in the U.S. without absences exceeding 30 consecutive days.
- Income thresholds: Combined income must not exceed established limits after applying allowable deductions.
Please note that the SSA conducts comprehensive annual reassessments to verify changes in the beneficiary’s resources, income, or medical condition. If you find discrepancies in a regular payment, or after a reassessment, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213, or with TTY assistance, at 1-800-325-0778.
Use the SSA Service Portal to check payment statuses or report changes. Local offices require appointments, which can be arranged using the branch locator.
