Some stimulus checks are in effect in the United States, which will be distributed to millions of eligible Americans: none of them are federal in scope, but there are several that are funded and managed from different states.

The states distributing these stimulus payments, checks, or rebates, include California, New York, and Arizona, with payments through November 2025. Let’s take a detailed look at the benefits that millions of families are eligible for.

Federal stimulus checks expire: State alternatives in place in 2025

Federal stimulus checks linked to 2021 payments are no longer available. The deadline to claim them was April 15, 2025, according to the IRS. However, some states have implemented state programs with direct payments or tax breaks for residents, subject to specific criteria such as income limits or tax returns.

By May 2025, at least ten states will maintain economic support initiatives. California, New York, and Arizona stand out for their programs with variable amounts and defined deadlines. For example, Sacramento Family First in California provides $725 per month to 200 low-income families until November 2025.

Some states, like Michigan and Colorado, offer automatic tax credits. In Michigan, the Working Families Tax Credit provides an average of up to $550, based on 2023 tax returns. Instead, Georgia distributes refunds of between $250 and $500 as part of an $11 billion budget surplus.

Each program sets specific requirements. In California, the Middle Class Refund 2.0 program requires filing 2023 taxes and meeting income thresholds. Payments, among others, $400 and $1,050, are distributed by direct deposit or mail until May 20. In New York, the Emergency Financial Relief Program is automatic for those who claimed the EITC or the Child Tax Credit in 2023.

Arizona limits its Cost of Living Assistance Fund to low-income households, with applications required by May 31. Programs like Pennsylvania’s, focused on older adults or people with disabilities, closed applications in December 2024, but could be renewed.

Federal stimulus checks emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, with payments of up to $1,400 per person in 2021. Upon the conclusion of these programs, states assumed the role of providing inflation and cost-of-living relief. The initiatives, while similar in objective, differ in amounts and coverage.

States with larger economies, like California, are implementing universal basic income pilot programs. Others, like New Jersey, have revamped their assistance programs, such as the ANCHOR Program, which offers up to $6,500 to cover housing expenses.

In contrast, Virginia is still debating unconfirmed proposals, such as possible tax cuts of between $200 and $400. Check with your state tax authority or state government today to learn how to apply and be eligible for these tax benefits or stimulus payments.
